Applicant Referals, Incentives and Disability Awareness

It was an honor to present to the Winchester Area SHRM members on the benefits of hiring individuals with unique abilities. Just as reminder, Virginia Division of Aging & Rehabilitative Services (DARS) can assist with providing your business qualified job applicants. Please do not hesitate to reach out with your hiring and retention needs, DARS may be supporting your next perfect new hire! Also inquire about scheduling disability awareness training for your next staff meeting or continuing education programs. This training is available to you and your staff at no cost, in person or virtually! Your business can also help to shape the workforce of tomorrow as well as create a future applicant pipeline by hosting a high school student tour and information session promoting your industry. Sharing what your business looks like and what qualifications are necessary to begin a career in your sector can give a high school student an answer to that age old question "What do I want to be when I grow up?"! Additional Considerations for Employers: * Host a "Summer Work Based Learning Program". Inquire for more details. * Revaluate some of your positions and see if DARS can provide an applicant to job share (making a FT position into two PT?) * Can some of your more skilled workers be freed up to be more productive in vital areas if you had someone to take over more entry levels tasks? * Reach out to DARS to learn more about becoming a "situation assessment" location. By doing so, you will directly help an individual with a disability determine job goals and career pathways. We would be happy to talk more about the details involved in participating in this type of activity...it's so easy and no cost or liability to your company! Additionally, DARS is available to consult on workplace accommodations questions. Please reach out to Samantha Greenfield/Job Placement Counselor/Virginia Division of Rehabilitative Services with any questions or ideas to collaborate on hiring, disability awareness, accommodations, student tours and informational interviews. It’s for the good of your business and our community! Kindest regards, Samantha M.
